New Jersey DIY-punk trio Screaming Females released their critically acclaimed sixth album Rose Mountain, earlier this year and are taking their blazing punk rock heroics on a national summer tour. Kicking things off July 27th in Cleveland, the band will make stops in Chicago, Omaha, Seattle, Los Angeles, Nashville, DC and more.

Today, the band shares a new video for album track “Empty Head” which features life-size puppets of characters created collaboratively by director Tobias Stretch and the band. Drummer Jarrett Dougherty shares, “Tobias Stretch is an amazing video artist and we were very excited to work with him. He has developed a unique style of life-sized stop motion animation that uses the real world around us as the location. To fuse our esthetic with Tobias' style, Marissa and Tobias worked together to create two dimensional characters. We all worked to turn these characters into life-sized puppets and Tobias directed, shot and edited the video over many months. We are very pleased with the final look!"

New Jersey DIY-punk trio Screaming Females released their critically acclaimed sixth album Rose Mountain, earlier this year and are taking their blazing punk rock heroics on a national summer tour. Kicking things off July 17th in their home state of New Jersey performing with The Bouncing Souls and Andrew Jackson Jihad, the band will make stops in Chicago, Omaha, Seattle, Los Angeles, Nashville, DC and more.

Setting out with a crystal clear vision to create songs both concise and melodic, the band explores a more streamlined sound, pushing vocal melodies and lyrical themes to the forefront. With that idea in mind, the band was thrilled to take on Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”, creating their own amped up rock ‘n roll rendition for AV Undercover which was released today.

On the cusp of celebrating 10 years as a band, Screaming Females announces Rose Mountain, the New Jersey DIY-punk trio’s sixth LP due February 24 on Don Giovanni Records. The band self-produced their previous releases (with Steve Albini engineering their 2012 LP Ugly and the 2014 concert album Live at the Hideout) but overturned the long-standing, self-imposed rule this time by bringing in Matt Bayles (Mastodon, the Sword) as a producer. Setting out with a vision so clear that it almost became a studio mantra, the resulting songs are concise, crisp and melodic, in essence creating at once their most complex and accessible record to date.

Upon listening to the blazing guitar and ecstatic percussion on Rose Mountain, the word “restraint” may not initially come to mind. And while melody has always been a central part of the band’s music, the musicians have often layered them into massive thickets of interlocking sound on previous albums. However, on Rose Mountain the band was ready to try something more streamlined with Paternoster’s vocal melodies and lyrical themes being pushed into the forefront, while never skimping on the raw intensity they have become known for.

Taut album opener “Empty Head” leads with a powerful guitar line that will leave fans enraptured on contact. Lovesick ballad “Hopeless” builds to a lush emotive climax while album closer “Criminal Image” takes on a more powerful stance with ecstatic guitar-driven peaks broken up by moments of melancholy. The infectious bass line and powerful arpeggiated guitar line set the stage for sweetly growling vocals on “Ripe”. "Ripe" was revealed with Pitchfork today and is available to post and share HERE.

Formed in 2005, Screaming Females is singer/guitarist Marisa Paternoster, bassist Michael Abbate and drummer Jarrett Dougherty. The band has performed alongside Dinosaur Jr., The Julie Ruin, Titus Andronicus + more and just wrapped up a national tour with PUJOL. Stay tuned for more info and opportunities to experience the band’s ferocity live on stage.

The highly anticipated sixth LP from New Jersey DIY-punk trio Screaming Females, Rose Mountain, is released today on Don Giovanni Records. In celebration, the band is thrilled to release the first official video for album track “Hopeless” which was produced and edited by legendary director, Lance Bangs. Filmed over the course of several winter nights, frontwoman Marissa Paternoster created the overlaying animation by hand over 5000+ frames of 35mm negative film. Bangs explains, “I wanted to make a piece with them that would feel nocturnal and draw upon issues of embodiment, but have a strong performance straight to the lens.  The band found a remarkable location out in the woods in central New Jersey called “Greek’s Playland”.  We kept driving out there and hopping fences during frozen nights in the fall and early winter, often shooting until Marissa’s fingers split open and bled.  Once we had the edit locked, we struck a 35mm negative and had several projection prints made. Then Marissa took the film and hand animated, scratched, and markered on top of 5400 individual frames of film.”

Setting out with a crystal clear vision to create songs both concise and melodic, the band explores a more streamlined sound, pushing vocal melodies and lyrical themes to the forefront. The journey to their 6th LP was recently profiled in SPIN’s cover story, leaving nary a doubt that the trio are continuing to push boundaries. Known for their raw intensity when performing live, the band will launch a massive international tour this month through May, including album release shows in San FranciscoBostonPhiladelphia and New York City tonight!

New Jersey DIY-punk trio Screaming Females’ sixth LP Rose Mountain is slated for release February 24 on Don Giovanni Records. New Jersey DIY-punk trio Screaming Females’ sixth LP Rose Mountain is slated for release February 24 on Don Giovanni Records and is available to pre-order now. Setting out with a crystal clear vision to create songs both concise and melodic, the band explores a more streamlined sound, pushing vocal melodies and lyrical themes to the forefront but never sacrificing their signature raw intensity.

While dealing with chronic mononucleosis in 2013, which put the band’s creative process temporarily on hold, frontwoman Marissa Paternoter became enamored with doctors’ offices sterile color palates during her frequent visits. In addition to inspiring the vision with which she created the Rose Mountain album art, the lyrics were also inspired by this experience. She explains, “A great deal of the lyrical content is about my experience with illness, navigating the bureaucracy of the American healthcare system, feelings of dysphoria and abandonment in terms of a relationship with my physical body, and my emotional fragility in the throws of sickness. Marissa spoke with PAPER Magazine about how she took back the reigns by harnessing the difficult year to create what might be at once the band’s most complex and accessible record to date, and shares new album track “Criminal Image”.

A formidable track with ecstatic guitar-driven peaks broken up by moments of melancholy, “Criminal Image” is available to post & share HERE.

Today, Marissa has announced her second collection of artwork titled Naked Under The Arch and released by Don Giovanni as a 40 page booklet professionally printed on high quality paper. It is available now as a limited edition, signed and numbered run of 100 for mail order only. The release of the book is celebrated by a month long gallery show at Gushin Philadelphia, with an opening on February 13th.
