Screaming Females' Marissa Paternoster Talks Album, Visual Art Themes + Reveals “Criminal Image” w/ PAPER

New Jersey DIY-punk trio Screaming Females’ sixth LP Rose Mountain is slated for release February 24 on Don Giovanni Records and is available to pre-order now. Setting out with a crystal clear vision to create songs both concise and melodic, the band explores a more streamlined sound, pushing vocal melodies and lyrical themes to the forefront but never sacrificing their signature raw intensity.

While dealing with chronic mononucleosis in 2013, which put the band’s creative process temporarily on hold, frontwoman Marissa Paternoter became enamored with doctors’ offices sterile color palates during her frequent visits. In addition to inspiring the vision with which she created the Rose Mountain album art, the lyrics were also inspired by this experience. She explains, “A great deal of the lyrical content is about my experience with illness, navigating the bureaucracy of the American healthcare system, feelings of dysphoria and abandonment in terms of a relationship with my physical body, and my emotional fragility in the throws of sickness. Marissa spoke with PAPER Magazine about how she took back the reigns by harnessing the difficult year to create what might be at once the band’s most complex and accessible record to date, and shares new album track “Criminal Image”.

A formidable track with ecstatic guitar-driven peaks broken up by moments of melancholy, “Criminal Image” is available to post & share HERE.

Today, Marissa has announced her second collection of artwork titled Naked Under The Arch and released by Don Giovanni as a 40 page booklet professionally printed on high quality paper. It is available now as a limited edition, signed and numbered run of 100 for mail order only. The release of the book is celebrated by a month long gallery show at Gushin Philadelphia, with an opening on February 13th.

Formed in 2005, Screaming Females is singer/guitarist Marissa Paternoster, bassistMichael Abbate and drummer Jarrett Dougherty. The New Jersey DIY-punk trio self-produced their previous releases (with Steve Albini engineering their 2012 LP Ugly and the 2014 concert album Live at the Hideout) but overturned the long-standing, self-imposed rule this time by bringing in Matt Bayles (Mastodon, the Sword) as a producer.
